◆  Air Source Heat Pump  ◆

The ZERO BOILER home system provides cooling, heating and domestic hot water using a heat pump with a rated electrical input of approximately 2 kW. This figure refers to electricity consumption. Heating and cooling output varies with outdoor temperature and operating conditions.

In summer, heat recovered during indoor cooling is used first to produce hot water. Excess heat is released outdoors. In winter, the heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air to supply heating and hot water.

Thermal storage allows heating and cooling energy to be stored for later use. Scheduling operation during solar generation hours can increase the use of electricity generated at home.

Indoor cooling is supplied through fan coil units (FCUs). Heating can be provided through underfloor heating or FCUs, depending on the home design.

ZERO BOILER Home Energy Platform

ZERO BOILER integrates cooling, heating and hot water production into one heat pump system, with the option to connect solar PV and battery energy storage.

By combining functions commonly provided by separate air conditioners, boilers and water heaters, the system aims to simplify home energy equipment and reduce energy consumption.

Solar electricity can be used directly or stored in a battery energy storage system (ESS) for later use. Together, these technologies can help reduce purchased electricity and fuel use while supporting a gradual transition toward an energy self-sufficient home.

Generate and store electricity at home. Use it for cooling, heating and hot water.

Example Integrated Configuration

Heat pump with 2 kW rated electrical input + 6 kW solar PV + 60 kWh ESS

Solar panels generate electricity during the day, while the ESS stores electricity for later use. The integrated system can supply household electricity needs and power the heat pump for cooling, heating and hot water throughout the day and night.

Actual performance and the level of energy self-sufficiency depend on the home’s energy demand, insulation, weather and system design.

Key Components

Heat pump with 2 kW rated electrical input + 100 L hot water tank + thermal storage system

Optional Energy Integration

6 kW solar PV + 60 kWh battery energy storage system (ESS)

Natural Refrigerant R290

ZERO BOILER is being developed to use R290 (propane), a natural refrigerant, to reduce its climate impact.

R290 has a very low global warming potential (GWP) and zero ozone depletion potential (ODP), helping reduce the environmental impact associated with conventional fluorinated refrigerants.

Key Features

    • Environmental performance : Very low global warming potential and no ozone depletion.

    • Hot water production : Suitable for heat pump applications requiring high-temperature hot water.

    • Future development : Supports the transition toward refrigerants with lower environmental impact.

    • Energy efficiency : Can support efficient heating and cooling when used in a properly designed system.

    • Service approach : R290 is a flammable refrigerant requiring specialist handling. ZERO BOILER plans to replace the complete outdoor unit when servicing the refrigerant circuit is required.

R290 is classified as an A3 flammable refrigerant. Products must incorporate dedicated safety measures and leak prevention, and meet applicable safety requirements.

Service and Maintenance

Designed for Simple, Efficient Maintenance

ZERO BOILER is designed to make components accessible for inspection and replacement, helping simplify maintenance.

1. Modular Components

The heat pump outdoor unit, circulation pumps, thermal storage tanks and fan coil units are arranged as separate functional components. This helps technicians identify faults and replace the affected component.

For faults requiring work on the R290 refrigerant circuit, the planned service approach is complete outdoor unit replacement.

2. External Circulation Pumps

Circulation pumps are installed in the external piping rather than inside the outdoor unit, allowing inspection and replacement without opening the refrigerant circuit.

3. Simplified Piping Connections

The ZB-2 water-side piping is being developed around 15A connections. A-CON piping fittings or equivalent connection materials are intended to simplify on-site installation and component replacement.

4. Standard Models and Components

Components and installation methods will be standardized for models such as ZB-2 and ZB-5 to support technician training, spare parts supply and efficient maintenance.

5. Trained Installation and Service Partners

ZERO BOILER is developing a regional network of trained installation and maintenance partners to support prompt on-site service.

Our goal is a durable energy system that is easy to install and maintain.

◆  Solar PV — 6 kW  ◆

ZERO BOILER aims to integrate a 6 kW residential solar PV system to generate electricity for cooling, heating and hot water production.

Fixed or sun-tracking solar panels can be selected to suit the property and installation conditions. Generated electricity is used first by the ZB-2 heat pump and household appliances.

Surplus electricity can be stored in an ESS for use at night or when solar generation is insufficient.

Key Features

    • Installed solar PV capacity : 6 kW

    • Target monthly generation : approximately 750 kWh

    • Electricity supply for the heat pump and household appliances

    • Increased solar self-consumption through ESS integration

The monthly generation figure is a planning target. Actual generation varies with sunlight, panel orientation, location, season and system configuration.

◆  Battery Energy Storage System — 60 kWh  ◆

ZERO BOILER is developing a residential energy platform with a 60 kWh battery energy storage system (ESS).

Surplus solar electricity generated during the day is stored for later use by the ZB-2 heat pump and household appliances at night or during periods of low solar generation.

The use of second-life electric vehicle batteries is also being considered, subject to safety and remaining-performance assessments.

Key Features

    • Nominal storage capacity : 60 kWh

    • Solar integration : Stores surplus solar electricity

    • Electricity supply : Supplies electricity at night and during periods of low solar generation

    • Battery reuse : Potential use of second-life EV batteries that meet safety and performance requirements

    • Customized design : Battery capacity and inverter configuration matched to household electricity demand

※ The 60 kWh figure is the nominal battery capacity. At a daily electricity use of 20 kWh, this is theoretically equivalent to approximately three days of consumption. Actual operating time depends on battery condition, usable capacity, conversion losses and household demand.
